Government Investigation

Challenge

Our client represented a financial institution involved in a high-profile government investigation alleging criminal misuse of investor information. Recognizing the need to move quickly to preserve all sources of potentially relevant data, counsel sent in Daegis® collections specialists to create forensic images of custodian hard drives and capture network file shares as well as active and archived email.

Solution

Daegis cataloged the contents of the collected server data and EnCase images using DHCollect and provided the catalogs to counsel to review. During their meetings with the DOJ and SEC, counsel was able to share the catalogs of the folder structure and files belonging to key custodians, from which the regulators marked selections that they wanted produced. Based on the information gleaned from these catalogs, the DOJ and SEC chose to reduce the scope of their investigation.

In addition to displaying a high degree of transparency and cooperation with the government investigators, use of DHCollect in this matter also resulted in substantial cost savings for the client—from nearly 200 gigabytes of preserved network data and EnCase images, less than 11 gigabytes were pulled for processing, review, and production.
